So for £95 from Games Workshop itself or potentially less from online retailers, how many points does this buy you?
Well first up I figured it would be worth doing this from a Crusade Era army list (eg 30k).
This box provides you the models to build the following units from a Crusade Astartes force:

Legion Praetor
Legion Centurion
Legion Command Squad
Elite
Legion Tactical Veteran Squad
Legion Terminator Squad
Contemptor Dreadnought Talon
Troops
Legion Tactical Squad
Legion Reconnaissance Squad

You obviously can't build all of these units, but you have the models to make a selection of them.
If you were to double up on your Boxed sets you would bolster your choices to include:
Legion Tactical Support Squad
Legion Heavy Support Squad
Both of these units require a minimum of 4 either Special or Heavy Weapons, so if you have spares kicking about (given that you can get 10 of these for £12 from Forgeworld) you could increase your options to include them from just one box, or potentially via trades.
This gives a decent number of choices from just your single starter box (something you can never complain about!)
So we have discussed what units you can represent, how about we now look at how many points you can make up from this starter box?
From one box I can make the following list:

This list comes in at 1240 points, which is a fair old start, and assumes all you have are the models provided in the box, and nothing to complete conversions with.

Now neither of these lists are going to be win at all costs, but they do give you an idea of how many points you can make up from just 1 or 2 starter boxes.
As I build up my Horus Heresy force I will experiment with some of the generic lists, and with some Chapter specifics (between myself and Dragkon we are likely to Own Characters for - World Eaters, Salamanders, Sons of Horus, Iron Hands & Ultramarines.)
