A New Project (Tyranids)!

A new project... as Games Workshop yet again sucks me in with their plastic crack!

So, when the new Tyranid codex came out back in January 2010 it had several effects on me.

Most of them unpleasant.

It let me down in a big way. I had all these models and then had to go out and buy even more models, because they pretty much outdated a chunk of the ones I had.

I had a magnificent Nerd Rage (and people who know me can attest to this, please don't) and stopped playing wargames for about 6 months. I then slowly got back into things, enjoying my hobby more as I knew it was something I wanted to do, something I really enjoyed.

I sold my tyranid army last year, which was fair enough as it made money which helped towards a house move, and most of the models I owned were not going to be ones I continued to use (too many carnifexes to be honest!)

I haven't looked back since then... not until this months White Dwarf. The new Tervigon / Tyrannofex model looks stunning.

So here I am blogging about how I am going to start this new army... this will be my third start of a Tyranid force, and fingers crossed the way I am going to do it should work better rather than worse.

My plan

1. Get my hands back on a codex
2. Find out what people do and do not use on the net
3. Build a list using the stuff people don't use
4. Scrap that list in favour of one that works
5. Buy the models in small manageable batches

I intend to build my 'Nid army one step at a time, posting what I have bought and then posting again a completed model/unit before moving onto the next item on my list.

The end aim is for me to build a list I am happy with, so I will have some decently painted models, and I think that by buying models slowly things should work out a little better for me.

So any advice, hints or tips as to what to use or avoid in the 'Nid codex, feel free to drop me a comment!

Er.... I'm saying absolutely nothing at all! lol

Actually looking forward to it always had a soft spot for them bugs and hopefully 6th edition rules won't cause another small explosion!

Hush you Rusty!

I think if 6th causes an explosion it will be more impressive somehow.

Looking forward to that, and will probably find the list I build will change when 6th hits.

played the tyranids at national tournaments.
Know the other player at national tournaments.

There are maybe 3 decent list. (and no, deep striking isn't on the list.)

1.
Hive Tyrant + guards + Lash whips + devourers.
2x Tervigons (Cataylst)
6x hive guards
2x20xgenstealers
From that core keep FnP on the genstealers, use the hive guards to open tanks and the hive tyrant to bail out the tervigons.

2.
Hive Tyrant + guards+paroxysm
2x15xhormagaunts
2x15xhormagaunts+AG+TS
2x3 Hive guards
1x3 venomthrope
More of a swarm list, the hormagaunts + Paroxysm+Old adversary eat anything, add either tervigons for staying power or more heavy support.

3.
Brain freeze.
Well, if you want some ideas as to what a 5e Tyranid player's doing, my Tyranids will be going into battle (probably against Space Marines) at Kirkcaldy Gaming Club on Sunday, if you are able to come down.
I was actually one of those Nid players upon whom the 5th edition codex had the opposite effect on me - it actually made me want to go back to Tyranids!
An example of a 2k list I've used in the past is
Hive Tyrant with lash whip/ bone sword & hive commander
3 Zoanthropes in a mycetic spore
3 Zoanthropes in a mycetic spore
10 Genestealers with broodlord
10 Genestealers with broodlord
20 Termagants with devourers
20 Termagants with devourers
Trygon Prime
Carnifex with two pairs of twin brainleech devourers
