Dystopian Wars - An Added Bonus!

This is less to do with the actual game system, and more to do with the Support and Community interaction you get from Spartan Games themselves.

Their forum has a lot of Spartan Employees on it that are very active in answering rules questions along with an FAQ that is regularly updated.

When a mistake is found the PDF's with updated stat cards are created and uploaded to their website here.

This is a great bonus when playing Dystopian Wars as the community that is present on these forums knows what it is on about and if the actual employees haven't answered (most likely due to a weekend / late night enquiry) then there is a good chance that someone else on the Forum will.

I just wanted to give you all another heads up about this, as its an excellent resource when playing Dystopian Wars (or any of their games to be honest).

My Hobby in January

This last month has been a month of ups and downs from a hobbying perspective. The oppourtunity arose to start doing articles on Belloflostsouls I found myself suddenly renewed in my drive to play and paint my Dystopian Wars models. Which has been a real positive thing, helping me get back into a game I had been flagging in.

On the flip side of that my FLGS announced that it will be closing down on the 19th Feb. It may have only been a few short years since it opened, but in that time it has had a definate effect on my hobby, introducing me to Roleplay Games, games like Hordes & Warmachine and lets not forget introducing me to Spartan Games and therefore to the Dystopian Wars. Kingdom of Adventure you will be missed when the day arrives that you close your doors for the last time.

However from my games playing in a month, all in all pretty happy.

Army List Wednesdays Grey Knights - 1250

So in the next 5 weeks I have three tournaments in Rapid Succession.

Stronghold – 1250 Points
40k Doubles Tournament – 1750 (875 each)
Chaos of the Warp – 2000

With this in mind I decided it was high time to look at getting some lists together.
Now I already have a plan of which armies I am using for each Tournament, and its pretty easy. Grey Knights for Stronghold & Chaos of the Warp, Necrons for the Doubles.

Since I don’t need practise with my Grey Knights they get theory crafting while the Necrons get playtime. Its harsh I know, but there you go.

So first up, some ideas for the Stronghold tournament 1250 points.

My first list is:
Inquisitor, Terminator Armour, Psycannon
Terminators x 10, Psycannon x 2
Strike Squad x 10, Psycannon x 2, Psybolt Ammo
Dreadknight – H. Incinerator, Personnal Teleporter
Dreadknight – H. Psycannon, Personnal Teleporter

So this list is a chopped down version of my 1750 list. I have lost Draigo and the Interceptors and replaced them with the Inquistor. All in all pretty happy with this, 4 scoring units and two threatening units to cause people problems!

The second list is a modified version of the one I took to the Glasgow Crucible last year.

Inquisitor – Terminator Armour, Psycannon
Terminators x 5, Psycannon
Strike Squad x 10, Psycannon x 2
Dreadknight – H. Incinerator, Personnal Teleporter
Dreadknight – H. Incinerator, Personnal Teleporter
Landraider

This again has two fast moving threats and the Landraider for a bit of ranged threats. It also gives me a nice place to hide models should I be worried about the enemy firepower.
In both lists the tactics are pretty simple. Be Aggressive. My guys need to get close, and need to do so quickly to stop the enemy. The Dreadknights can either try and save their shunt for late objective grabs, or can use it in Turn 1 or 2 (my preferred method) to force the enemy to either kill them or be in combat with them.

Simple plans work best, and as of yet no one has found an easy way to deal with both Dreadknights in a turn so fingers crossed this will keep my chances up there.
So any thoughts or opinions on these lists? Which do you think is the better of the two, or what would you take?

As mentioned last week, Spartan games released another blog post with updated rules clarifications and modifications to some Generators. Here is my Analysis of it!

Firstly the Prussian Empire got a boost with the changes to Tesla Coil Weaponary. It has now been confirmed these Weapon Systems CAN target Flying & Diving Models in Range Band 1.

Nothing wrong with this, in fact I think its a nice boost. It isnt game Changing but it does give the Prussians a new tool to deal with those pesky enemies that get up close... and with the Damage to their targets AP... it does give a nice benefit to one of the Prussian Strong points which is boarding!

The Second change is that if you target a ship with a Generator, you ARE allowed to complete a Boarding assault against that same ship.

Another nice bonse for those of you that like the Offensive power that Generators can bring to the table!

The third update is a tweak to both the Telsa Generator & the Ultrasonic Pulverising Generator (PUG).

The Tesla Generator has been confirmed capable to shoot at Targets in RB1 regardless of height level. You get to roll 1D6, and on the result of a 5 or a 6 you get to roll for Critical Damage on the ship, ignore the actual damage it does, however its a nice boost to restricting the use people can get from their systems.

Also as this isnt a Gunnery attack, Shields wont help!

The Tesla Generator can now also provide a +1D3" movement each turn when not being used as a Weapon.

Both of these (I feel) improve the Tesla Generators effectiveness, and its now useful all the time as it provides the extra movement when not in range to hurt the enemy!

The PUG now reduces the enemy ships effectiveness, basically getting rid of AP / Ack Ack / Concussion Charges.

Its usefulness is definately there, you will need to plan your turn out, and hope a D6 roll goes your way, but it does mean that you could be crippling the enemy flagship with a decent roll and some well positioned Ships!

Hope you liked my quick reveiw of the changes it brought in, by now I imagine most of you have got a feel of what these changes are like in game. Feel free to drop me a comment as I would love to hear your opinions.

Planetary Empires Campaign Part 5, take 2.

Hi all,

Here is the content that should have gone in Part 5. I am going to update Part 5 to show it all properly anyway, but wanted to make sure that you didn't miss it if you were wondering where the table disappeared too.

Random Events Chart.

Roll a D66 and consult the table below:

11: Recalled from War, Removed one of your armies from play until the start of the next season
12: Embattled, When moving your armies, roll 2D3 in enemy territory, 2D6 in friendly territory and pick the lowest.
13: Enemy Sympathisers, Any Fortification Saves your need to make this turn are at -1.
14: Assassin! Randomly pick one of your Commanders and immediately roll on the Character Injuries Chart.
15: Deserters, Pick any of your tiles are remove the flag
16: Disease, Pick one of your tiles and remove the building from it, but leave the flag in it.
21: Stoking Unrest, Pick one of your enemies tiles and remove the flag from it (may not be a Hive City)
22: Settlers, Pick an unclaimed tile and plant your flag in it
23: Raiding Party, Pick a rivals tile without a building on it and plant your flag in it.
24: Sappers. Remove one of your Rivals buildings from a tile, but leave their flag in the tile.
25: Grab the Resource! Pick an enemies Manufactorum and plant your Flag in it.
26: Seize Command! Pick an enemies Command Bunker and plant your Flag in it.
31: The Shifting Warp. Pick one of your Armies and move it D6+2 Tiles in a random direction (use a scatter dice), it it reaches the Board edge then it stops!
32: Forced March. Move one of your armies again.
33: Move Move Move! Roll 2D3 / 2D6 when moving your armies and pick the highest.
34: False Trials: Move one of your enemies armies.
35: Heroic Intervention: Randomly pick one of your Commanders they gain the Benefit of Outstanding Leadership from the Spoils of War chart. Add this to their army roster entry.
36: Veterans! Pick one of your units and roll on the Spoils of War chart, point 5 (Valorous Deeds) they are now a Veteran unit!
41: Spies. In your next game you may look at your enemies army list before picking your own (excluding the mandatory choices you can't change such as your Commander / Veteran Units).
42: Dawn Attack. In your next game, roll a D6 for each enemy unit before they deploy, on a roll of a 1 they may not be deployed and move in from reserves (they may choose instead to deep strike or outflank if they have the required Special Rule).
43: Scouting Force. In your next game, after both sides have deployed you may redploy 1+D3 units (this works along side any other rules that grant you this benefit so would be 2+2D3 units etc).
44: Its a Trap! In your next game you may pick whether to deploy first or second.
45: Prepared Ambsh: In your next game you may pick the mission and whether to deploy first or second.
46: Stacking the Odds: In your next game your army is 25% larger than your enemies!
51: Siege Force: If you win the next battle you automatically capture your opponents tile.
52: Clarity of Thought: In your next game you get +1 to your steal the initative roll, or can force your opponent to re-roll theirs if they succeed.
53: The White Flag: Pick an opponent, they may not challenge you this turn. Although you can still challenge them.
54: A word in your ear: Pick an opponent you get to declare their challenge this turn.
55: Teleporter: You may challenge any opponent for any tile (that is not a Hive City) this turn, regardless of location.
56: Prayers to the Emperor/Greater Good/ Dark Gods/Something, You may force your Opponent to re-roll any rolls he has to make on the Character Injury Table.
61: Natural Resources: Place a Manufactorum on any tile you control, that does not already have a building.
62: Unwritten Victories: Pick one of your armies and immediately roll on the Spoils of War chart.
63: Untapped Power: Pick a Territory and add a Power Station to it.
64: Cunning Commander: For the rest of the turn you count as having the smallest Empire.
65: Bolstered Defences: Any fortification Saves you make this turn get +1
66: Reinforcements Arrive: For the rest of the Season you gain an extra army.

Planetary Empires Campaign Part 7

Ok so Day 7 should have been the last day, hence it being titled winning the campaign... however I actually feel that the next post on Day 8 is well worth a read!

Winning the Campaign

The Campaign is won by the first army to reach 15 Tiles, or if the Campaign reaches its conclusion prior to this happening the Largest Empire.

At the end of the Winter Campaign every player takes part in a Multi-player game.

Each force picks a 3000 point army, excluding their Commanders. The Commanders are included Free of Charge and take up no FOC slots.

The 3000 points must include any Veteran Units that were in the three armies. If this means there are more than the FOC of Veteran units then you have to include them but you may not pick any other choices for that FOC slot.

Then Each player is paired off against another one.

The Mission: Total Dominace

In this mission 5 Objectives are deployed. Each player has a HQ objective that is worth 3 Objective points to themselves and 1 to the enemy. This may be placed anywhere on the board (as close to the board edge as you like) but not with 12” of another objective.

The players then Roll off for the next three Objectives, placing them Normally.

At the end of the game each side counts up how many Kill Points & Objectives they have.

Then they roll a D6 and consult the Table Below

1-2 : The Player with the Most Kill Points Wins
3-4 : The Player with the Most Objective Wins
5-6: The Player with the Most Kill Points & Objectives wins.

Deployment: Pitched Battle

Game Length: The game goes on for 5 turns then a winner is calculated.

Special Rules:

After this game is finished the Winner takes their remaining Models and plays another game.

Characters do not regain wounds or one use Wargear items between Games

Vehicles that are Immobilised get to roll a D6 at the end of a game on a 5+ they manage to do a Battlefield repair that allows it to move, if they fail the 5+ roll then they cannot join the new game and count as destroyed.

Units that have lost models are put back into action without the Missing Models.

This is an Elimination as losing knocks a Player out, however there is nothing to stop the losing players playing each other.

For the Second Round it is decided that the Player that wins first plays the Player that wins 2nd, so the 3rd and 4th

Planetary Empires Campaign Part 6

So this tile of a crater seemed to make sense when talking about large multi-player games designed to blow seven kinds of poop out of each team.

At the end of each season there is a large narrative game aimed at getting as many of the players as possible involved in one game.

They are not mandatory, but will give a bonus to the scenario winner and are aimed at having fun enjoyable and co-operative games.

Spring

At the end of the Spring the Empires meet on the field of Battle, Alliances are tests as the game pits two teams of players against each other.

In this game each player picks a 2500 points force from their Codex. They must use any and ALL Veteran Units they have currently and one of their Commanders (they choose).

The Game is based around two Alliances fighting each other to decide which side wins the day.

The Mission Type: Objective Based

Board Setup:

In the Centre of the Board there will be three Objectives. They should be setup on the Centre line of the Board. Divide the Board Length in three (width wise) and place an objective on each of these points. Each of these Objectives is worth 1 Objective point.

Each Opposing HQ model (not Transport) will count as an Additional Objective. These can only be caputred by HQ or Elite units. When a HQ is killed/run down/runs of the board mark that spot with an Objective Marker. These are worth 2 Objective points each. This is to both the team the HQ came from and the opposition.

Please note that HQ's may not be setup in Reserve in this mission. If the HQ joins a unit in a Drop Pod then that Drop Pod must be one of the ones to arrive on the first turn.

Turn Length: 5 Turns, on a roll of a 4+ a 6th Turn will be played (time permitting).

Deployment: Pitched Battle

Victory Conditions:

In the event of a tie compare the following level to see who won

Primary: The number of Objectives Claimed decides the Winning Team

Secondary: The Number of HQ's killed decides the Winning Team

Tertiary: The Number of Kill Points decides the Winning Team

Special Rules:

Night fighting

The Benefits!

At the end of the game the winning team counts up how many Objectives & Kill points each player got during the game. Then the opposition roll a D6 and consult the chart below to determine who won:

1-2: The Player holding the most Objectives wins

3-4; The Player that got the most Kill Points wins

5-6 The Player that got the most Kill Points & Objectives wins.

The winning side of the Spring game each benefit from one additional Army they can setup during the Summer Season.

The winning Player of the Spring game may place a free building of their choice anywhere within their Territory.

Summer

After a long Summer of War, the Commanders look to a different tactic for gaining the edge in the upcoming months.

In this game each player picks a Kill Team following all the Normal rules for Kill Team rules (found in the Battle Missions book) with the following Exceptions:

No Special Characters
Your Force must consist of at least five Models

Kill Team Scenario:

Board Size: 4 x 4

Deployment Zones: 12" from the Board edge

Objective: Infiltrate Enemy Communication Device

Each side sets up an Enemy communication device within their deployment zone.

This device cannot be destroyed.

The Objective is for a team to move one of their models into Base to base contact with the Communications array, in their following shooting phase they attempt to hack the device and upload a Virus (in the case of the Tyranides it will be some form of genetically engineered Virus that sends signals to their base for decryption and translation).

On a D6 roll of a 5+ the Virus is successfully uploaded.

Victory Conditions:

The Player to upload the Virus first wins!

The Winning Player is able to move one of the Losers armies D3 tiles due to mis communication at the beginning of each of the next seasons turns.

Autumn

As the War drags on the Commanders begin to requisition larger Warmachines and forces to drive their War Effort

They forge Alliances and commit and all out offensive to wipe out the Enemy Armies.

Game Type; Apocalypse

Orders:

Primary Capture Objective Alpha, if this is not achieved then move on to Secondary Orders.

Secondary Capture Objective Beta & Gamma, if this is not achieved then move on to Tertiary Orders.

Tertiary Kill Points.

Each player builds a 3000 Point army this should include one of their Commanders and any Veteran units they currently have on their Rosters.

Each Player MAY also include any 1 Apocalypse Formation or Unit from any of the Apocalypse material in the Apocalypse Rulebooks and Supplenments including the Games Workshop website.

Setup:

Objective Alpha is setup in the middle of the Board

Objective Beta is setup by the team going first ,and Objective Gamma by the team going second.

No Mans land is 20", so 10" on either side of the line splitting the table in two.

For each player on the winning team they are allowed to Capture an adittional tile from an Opposing player.
You may only Capture a Tile from an Empire you have a tile adjacent to already.
Where possible each Opposing Player should only lose 1 tile, if however this is not possible then a player may lose more than 1 tile.
You may not Capture an Opposing Hive City in this Manner.

Winter

24: Sappers. Remove one of your Rivals buildings from a tile, but leave their flag in the tile.
25: Grab the Resource! Pick an enemies Manufactorum and plant your Flag in it.
26: Seize Command! Pick an enemies Command Bunker and plant your Flag in it.
31: The Shifting Warp. Pick one of your Armies and move it D6+2 Tiles in a random direction (use a scatter dice), it it reaches the Board edge then it stops!
32: Forced March. Move one of your armies again.
33: Move Move Move! Roll 2D3 / 2D6 when moving your armies and pick the highest.
34: False Trials: Move one of your enemies armies.
35: Heroic Intervention: Randomly pick one of your Commanders they gain the Benefit of Outstanding Leadership from the Spoils of War chart. Add this to their army roster entry.
36: Veterans! Pick one of your units and roll on the Spoils of War chart, point 5 (Valorous Deeds) they are now a Veteran unit!
41: Spies. In your next game you may look at your enemies army list before picking your own (excluding the mandatory choices you can't change such as your Commander / Veteran Units).
42: Dawn Attack. In your next game, roll a D6 for each enemy unit before they deploy, on a roll of a 1 they may not be deployed and move in from reserves (they may choose instead to deep strike or outflank if they have the required Special Rule).
43: Scouting Force. In your next game, after both sides have deployed you may redploy 1+D3 units (this works along side any other rules that grant you this benefit so would be 2+2D3 units etc).
44: Its a Trap! In your next game you may pick whether to deploy first or second.
45: Prepared Ambsh: In your next game you may pick the mission and whether to deploy first or second.
46: Stacking the Odds: In your next game your army is 25% larger than your enemies!
51: Siege Force: If you win the next battle you automatically capture your opponents tile.
52: Clarity of Thought: In your next game you get +1 to your steal the initative roll, or can force your opponent to re-roll theirs if they succeed.
53: The White Flag: Pick an opponent, they may not challenge you this turn. Although you can still challenge them.
54: A word in your ear: Pick an opponent you get to declare their challenge this turn.
55: Teleporter: You may challenge any opponent for any tile (that is not a Hive City) this turn, regardless of location.
56: Prayers to the Emperor/Greater Good/ Dark Gods/Something, You may force your Opponent to re-roll any rolls he has to make on the Character Injury Table.
61: Natural Resources: Place a Manufactorum on any tile you control, that does not already have a building.
62: Unwritten Victories: Pick one of your armies and immediately roll on the Spoils of War chart.
63: Untapped Power: Pick a Territory and add a Power Station to it.
64: Cunning Commander: For the rest of the turn you count as having the smallest Empire.
65: Bolstered Defences: Any fortification Saves you make this turn get +1
66: Reinforcements Arrive: For the rest of the Season you gain an extra army.

Spoils of War Chart

Living in Infamy: When this army next fights the opponent it fought last they gain Preferred Enemy against you
Elite Army: Next time you fight a battle you may have 1 Extra Elite / Fast Attack / Heavy Support at the Expense of 2 Troop Slots.
Reinforcements: May take an additional D6 x 25 points.
Outstanding Leadership: Pick one of your HQ choices (Commander or otherwise). They gain the following benefit (which they will confer on any unit they join)
1. Stealth
2. Infiltrate
3. Scout
4. Fearless
5. Counter Attack
6. Furious Charge
Valorous Deeds. Pick of your units and make it a Veteran Unit. Roll a D6 to see what special Rule it gains: (if it already has the special rule you roll, then role again.)
1. 1 – Stealth
2. 2- Acute Senses
3. 3- Infiltrate
4. 4-Scout
5. 5- Stubborn
6. 6- Fearless
Commended by the High Command. Your Commanders acts on the Battlefield have made good impressions on the leaders in your Empire. Roll a D6.

1-3, They provide them with additional Wargear Options granting them 1 of their upgrades for Free.
4-6, The Commanders training grant him a Bonus USR, this is chosen from the Rulebook and is permanently added to his Roster entry.

Ignominious Defeat Chart

A Sound beating – When your army next fights the race that defeated them roll a D6 for each unit that starts on the table, on a roll of a 1 that unit is Pinned for the 1^st Turn. Any Tanks/Vehicles count as Crew Stunned instead and this result cannot be ignored or downgraded in anyway.
Sabotage – While your army was away fighting the enemy snuck past your sentries and destroyed one of your buildings. Select the nearest building to the tile you fought over and remove it from the map.

Vengeance will be ours! When this army next fights a battle against the race that defeated you, all your units benefit from Preferred Enemy, If the enemy got a Living in Infamy then your army also benefits from Scout/Infiltrate or Stealth for the game (yes you read that right, the entire army).

Character Injuries

If a Commander is removed as a casualty in the game, roll a D6 on the following table.

Serious Injury. Roll again
- 1= Dead
- 2 = Misses the Next Game
- 3= Misses the Next Game
- 4= Loses a randomly selected Commander upgrade (if any have been earned)
- 5= Its just a Flesh Wound – No Ill Effect
- 6= Its just a Flesh Wound – No Ill Effect
Captured – The enemy have taken him hostage. If they still hold him at the end of a season you will need to either play a Special Mission to rescue him, or trade any Tile bordering the Enemy Empire to get them back. You get to choose the Tile and the Enemy may not refuse whichever tile is offered in Trade.
Minor Injury – Misses the Next Game
Psychological Injury, Roll on the table below. If character already has the rule roll again.
- 1= Rage
- 2= Slow & Purposeful
- 3= No Ill Effect
- 4= No Ill Effect
- 5= Stubborn
- 6= Fearless
Where’s my sword? One Random item of Wargear is lost by the Commander. They lost all Benefits of this item and may not replace or re-buy the item except through the Commended by the High Command

Power Stations:

If you have a Higher Power station Value compared to your opponent then you get the following benefits:

If you have a Higher Value you get +1 to Rolling for who goes first
If your Value is Double your Opponents you get the Bonus above, and +1 for the Roll fo Picking your Deployment Area
If your Value is Triple your Opponents then you get the Bonuses listed above and +1 for any Reserve Rolls.

Shield Generators

Provide defensive Bonuses to the Tile its in and the Tiles surrounding it. See the chart above.

Manufactorum

Compare your Manufactorum total to your opponents and then consult the points below:

If your Total is less than your Opponent you get no Benefit
If your Total is more than your Opponent you get a 50 Point bonus for this game
If your total is Double your Opponents then you get a 100 point bonus for this game
If your total is Triple your Opponents then you get a 150 point bonus for this game.

Command Bastion:

The Command Bastions allow you to train your troops. Once per turn you may Nominate an Army for Training. This must be after the Army has participated in a Battle.

Randomly select one of the units that Survived the game (regardless of winning or losing) and roll a D6. On a Score of a 4+ that unit gains a USR from the main Rulebook and becomes a Veteran Unit.

You get +1 for each Bastion you control after the first.

Spaceports:

These tiles allow you to specifically attack a tile anywhere on the Board via a Planetstrike mission.

If you win the Scenario then you automatically capture the Tile from the enemy. Planetstrike missions may not be undertaken on Hive Cities or other Spaceports are their Air Defences are too strong.

If a building is present on the tile you attempt to attack you are fighting a Stronghold mission, otherwise you are fighting a Planetfall mission.

When playing a Planetstrike mission you get no Bonuses from your Power Stations or Manufactorums as your forces are attacking in an unusual way.

Hive Cities:

These count as a Power Station, Command Bastion, Spaceport & Manufactorum. To Capture a Hive City you must fight and win a Special Scenario.

Planetary Empires Campaign Part 2

So day 2 of the 8 days of Planetary Empires... hope you arent bored yet as this is a relatively comprehensive set of rules for a campaign.

Yes I did base sections of this on the rules that came out of Blood in the Badlands, but I assure you they are all for 40K now!

Campaign Turns.

Turn Order:

At the beginning of each Campaign Turn you need to resolve the following actions.

Random Events
Move Armies
Declare War
Fight Battles
Resolve Victories and Defeats
Resolve expeditions
End of Turn.

Here is a Break down of the Actual Steps

Random Events - Roll a D66 on the Random Events table for each player and make a note of each players result.

Move Armies - The borders of empires are expanded as armies advance across the land. An army can be used to claim unclaimed tiles, fortify lands by building Power Stations, Command Bastions, Shield Generators & Manufactorums, fending off enemies or invading enemies. At the start of each turn, starting with the player with the smallest empire (or in season one via the order in which people placed their Empires down) they get to nominate an army and move it. This then alternates from one player to another until all the armies that players want to move have been moved. At all times at least one army must be kept within a players empire to defend the land, any other armies may roam freely.

If your army is in Enemy or Neutral Tiles then it moves D3 Tiles a turn
If it is in your Territory it can move upto D6+1 tiles a Turn
If it is on a Spaceport then it can move anywhere on the Map that is not an Enemy controller Spaceport / Hive City. If you choose to move them to an enemy tile they are performing a Planetstrike Attack against that Tile (for Clarification on this check the Spaceport section & Declare War section of this Rules pack).

Declare War - Starting with the player with the smallest empire each player can challenge another player to battle. Attempting to capture their land, or drive off their invading armies. Players may issue 1 Challenge a turn. You also may not issue a challenge to a player that has already been challenged (unless you fancy playing a three way battle).If you have been challenged you may not issue a challenge of your own. Challenges are issued under the following conditions.

If an Army you control has moved from a Spaceport tile to another a enemy controlled tile then they initiate a Planetstrike Mission against that Tile.
If you have an army occupying the same tile as another players army (unless you have an alliance).
If another player *non allied* has an army in your empire you must issue a challenge to them.
Otherwise if you have any army in another (non allied) players empire you must issue a challenge to them.
After all Players have fought 1 Challenge they may fight an additional Challenge with another of their armies, assuming they can find an Opponent willing to play another game this turn. If you cannot find an opponent who accepts your challenge they do not automatically forfeit!
A Hive City is a Fortress, and by Capturing an Enemies City you will be effectively removing them from the game. In order to Attack a Hive City you will need to meet the following Requirements

Control Tiles Adjacent to the Hive City itself
Be in Control of Tiles on Opposite sides of the Hive City.
Fight and win the Capture Hive City Mission (see Part 8 for Details)

Fight Battles - When fighting a battle you need to consider the following.
- The Point size of the game is decided by players fighting it, the only stipulation is that all Veteran Units must be used (which will in itself set a minimum points size).
- Players Get Bonus points to their Army. The player with the Least tiles gets +50 points for each tile less than their opponent. Plus any benefits from any Manfactorums they may control.
- No army may be more than 25% larger than another (due to any benefits etc).
- The Tile you are fighting over helps decide the mission you are playing.
- Tiles with no buildings on can either be played as Seize Ground or Annihilation. The Deployment is decided by the normal way.
- Tiles with a Building on are either Capture and Control or Seize Ground, The Attacker chooses which mission type it is, while the defender picks the deployment type.
- Planetstrike Missions are played using either the Standard Planetfall mission from the Planetstrike Supplement if the Tile has no Buildings, if however the Tile does have a building on it then the Planetstrike mission used is the Stronghold mission.
- You must use the Veteran units and Commanders / Lieutenants written on the army roster you are using. In the case of the Planetstrike Missions (due to the different FOC each army must use its Veteran Units, and then may choose the different options allowed.

Resolve Victories & Defeats - The Victorious Player must roll a D6 and consult the spoils of war table, The Defeated player must roll on the Ignominious Defeats table. Any Commander that was removed as a casualty during the game must roll on the Character Injuries table. Finally the winner must roll a d6, on a

1-3 The defeated army is driven back 1 tile towards their capitol.
4-6 The Defeated Army is removed from Play as it scatters for home.

Resolve Expeditions - Each of your armies may perform the following actions

If an army is driven back by another army they cannot do anything else this turn.
If an army is in an unclaimed tile they may claim it. Stick a flag in it.
If your army is in a tile occupied by an enemy army and a battle wasn’t fought roll a D6, and consult the list below:
1. On a 1 your army is removed.
2. On a 2-3 your army is driven back a tile.
3. On a 4-5 the enemy is driven back a tile.
4. On a 6 the enemy army is removed.
If your army is on a tile you already control then it may build one of the following: Power Stations, Command Bastion, Manufactorum, Shield Generator. Each army may only build once per season.
If your army is in an enemy tile that does not contain any armies you may attempt to conquer it. The enemy player may make a fortification save to see if he can prevent you doing so. If the player rolls a 6+ they prevent you taking the tile. The following modifiers apply:

For Each Tile you control that Borders it -1 (to a Max of -6)
If you won a Planetstrike Scenario on the tile this turn -5
The Tile contains Defence Lines +1
The Tile is a Mountain or Spaceport Tile + 2
The tile is adjacent to a Shield Generator +Bonus (Race Specific)
The tile contains a Shield Generator +Bonus (Race Specific)
A Natural 1 is always a failure and a natural 6 is always a success.

End of Turn - At the end of each season tidy up the board by removing all the armies from it, and fight the large scenario.

Planetary Empires Campaign Part 1

This Marks the beginning of a Planetary Empires week and a day! I am going to post the rules for a Campaign I am going to run with a few people that I know, so get ready for the next 7 days of posts with rules and ideas! I hope you all enjoy reading them as much as I have in making them (or modifying them)!

A Set of rules for a Planetary Empires campaign. These use an amalgamation of the rules from the Blood in the Badlands Campaign book and the Planetary Empires Booklet and some of my own ideas as well!

Races

To begin with each player in the campaign needs to pick a race, this will be their race for the duration of the campaign.

After they have chosen their race they need to pick / create a Leader for their Empire. This Character is chosen from the HQ section of their Codex.

He/She/It will need a name and some details, maybe a description, some personality information along with their acts of heroism (or otherwise) to flesh him out. He is your Empires Leader and may not be changed

After you have created your Commander you will need to create two Lieutenant Commanders, these characters should follow the same details as has been laid out above, except that excluding any mounts they Characters should cost less points than your first one. Why would anyone follow someone who is not as powerful as them?

You may not Select Special Characters to lead your Empire or be one of your Lieutenants. The reason for this is simple. The rules here present a chance for a more mundane Character to rise to eminence. Special Characters are already there and have all the bonuses they need.

This is not to say that you cannot select a Special Character as part of your Army, however they can never become a Commander, and units with Special Character upgrades cannot become Veteran Units (mentioned later on).

Armies

Each season players start with three armies. Each Army needs a counter to represent its location on the map.

You will need to know which of your Commanders & Lieutenants is attached to which army. They can only change their armies between seasons. Each of your Commanders / Lieutenants must be assigned to a different army.

Each army is a fluid beast with only the attached Commander & Veteran units staying the same from game to game.

Setup

Once the Map has been built each Player picks a Hive City as their base of operations. The order in which they do this can be agreed or decided by a Dice off. They then proceed to place flags in the remaining tiles.

When claiming a tile for your Empire during the Setup phase you need to follow one simple rule. Each tile you capture must already be touching one of your tiles. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot claim a tile because of this, you may claim another unclaimed tile on the map.

Seasons:

At the beginning of each season starting with the player with the smallest Empire, or in the case of the 1^st season, the player that placed their Empire first, players get to place their three armies anywhere within their Empire.

Each Season consists of three Campaign Turns. Each Season also provides a Benefit or Disadvantage of its own.

Spring: Dangerous Terrain tests are failed on a 1 or 2 due to the conditions.

Summer: The Summer brings a drive from each of the Empires in their aim for total Conquest, the proximity of the Sun & Moons mean that Night Fighting rules are in effect only on a roll of a 4+ in Dawn of War missions.
Autumn: HQ units are of Vital Importance in the Close stages of the War. In any Kill Point mission HQ units (and any Transports) count as 2 Kill Points in any kill point game.
Winter; The Winter weather takes a terrible toll on the armies involved. At the beginning of the game roll a D6 for any Vehicle in your army. On a roll of a 1 it counts a stunned for the Opening turn of the game (this result cannot be changed in anyway).
At the end of each of the first three seasons there is an ‘event’ the winner of this event will receive a benefit for the next season. These events are covered in more detail in later posts.

DWARF

DWARF, aslo known as Dunfermline Wargaming and Roleplaying Fellowship is the closest club to where I live.

While I do a lot of my gaming at Kingdom of Adventure, I am now making more and more time to get along to the DWARF gaming nights held on a Friday.

Below are some pictures from a Typical gaming night for them, as a general rule there tend to be anything from 6 or more 40k or Warhammer games on the go, along with a RPG's and games like Magic being played as well.

Its always busy and has been ticking along now for a fair old time.

They also hold two Warhammer Tournaments a year, one in the first half of the year and one in the second.

I was lucky enough to attend the Winter War tournament in November with my Dwarves where I finished 13th of 42. Not bad at all for my first games of Warhammer in 7 or 8 months lol!

I intend to attend this more often, especially as I owe a certain Mr Harpers Tomb Kings a smacking around. Well an attempt to do so.

Dystopian Wars - Game Setup Review

So on the back of my post about the Tiny Fliers... here is a quick review of the Game Setup PDF that Spartan Recently upload.

This lays it out very clearly exactly what you need to do when playing the game.

Previously the victory conditions were very scenario driven, which is great once you have your head into the game and know what you are doing, but for pickup games I think it is better to have some simpler win conditions and guidlines for how the game / force should be built.

First things first, the Fleet Commodore he has actually got a little better. He is your Fleet commander and basically YOU as the guy in charge.

He confers 4 bonuses to either his ship or his fleet within his command distance. This is a larger list than he used to have and the bonuses are very much based on his command distance. So this means smart play will be keeping your Commodore in with your fleet. I know some people (myself included from time to time) have run their Fleet Commodore at the enemy on their best warship to cause the most damage. Not saying this tactic now wont work, but it may not be the best use of him.

The next thing ups is Fleet Organisation this is again something that I am glad to have seen streamlined. Now when building a fleet you pick a Core Force this can be either Land, Naval or Air.

You then pick you points size, it gives you some guides for this, but you can pretty much play to any point size you want (your house/club, you decide!).

The next bit in here is on the game types, there are basically three suggested, either Open, Friendly or Tournament. The Open game has no restrictions you take whatever you want with as much of it as you want, although it advises you and your opponent agree a Core force prior to the game so it is a fun match up.

For the Friendly game, it introduces the idea of some restrictions, but they are very easy ones to build your force around. You basically have to include a Squadron of Small, Medium and Large (or Massive) ships in your Core force. After that you are free to spend your points where you want.

In the Tournament Games it goes in depth about the % break downs of how forces should be built, what your maximum allowance is on any given type / class.

I think its good that they have broken the three of these down as the Fleet breakdown % in the main rulebook were intimidating to say the least, and I enjoy maths and list building!

Finally we have Field Orders. These are basically your victory conditions. There is a table of 6 which you roll a D6 to decide what your field orders are. However you are always able to swap any Field Order rolled for the 1 result.

So basically you can always play to Destroy or Capture 70% of the Opposing Fleets maximum Fleet Value. Also having a chart means you can never be sure what your opponent needs to do to win the game.

Dystopian Wars - Tiny Flyers rules revised!

So with Christmas came presents from Spartan games.

This post is going to cover the Tiny Flyer changes they made. You can find the PDF file for this here.

First things first. Wing sizes. These havent actually changed. Tiny Tokens could be no larger than a group of 5 anyway.

The main thing they have changed with the wings is the fact that all the tokens have the same fuel value, and must now touch another token within the wing.

Before you could have a unit of Tiny Flyers and have each Token moving off to do its own thing. The problem with this is that it became a problem tracking individual tokens and their fuel.

Now with them all remaining touching each other its much easier to know which token belongs to which wing.

Following on from that... Fuel. Love the concept not been too sure about the implementation of it. However now the fuel is for the Wing, not for individual Tokens. Again much easier to track, only 1D6, or counter.

I already have some ideas for how I want to represent this on the Battlefield. Hopefully there will be some pictures to show!

AckAck vs Tiny Flyers.

Given the previously mentioned rules changes this section had to change as well.

So now you figure out your AckAck vs the Wing and roll the dice. Any 6's remove one of the tokens from the Wing. You then count up the number of hits (ignoring the 6's) if you have the same number or more hits than there are tokens left in the Wing, then the whole Wing aborts, reducing its Fuel by 1.

Not 100% sure if the 6 allows you to re-roll a D6, but I dont see them having changed this somehow so until I see otherwise I assume its a Yes, a 6 will destroy a token and allow you another Roll.
They have also Clarified that an Abort result prevents any other actions being taken, be it Attacks, AckAck etc. So if you suffer the Abort your Wing loses 1 fuel, not the 2 that you used to for initiating the attack (1 for attacking and 1 for the the abort).

Also it used to be that if your Tiny Tokens attacked a unit of Crusiers, each crusier would use all of its AckAck and target each token individually. This not only slowed the game down, but also weakened Tiny Tokens Effectiveness.

Now you can still do this, but in order to abort the rule, you need to get a number of Aborts equal to the number of tokens left after your attack.

So for example:

5 Tiny Tokens attack a Cruiser Squadron. Each Crusier has an AckAck of 4. So you can roll those 4 D6 from each Cruiser Seperately or you can link fire. If you link fire you will drop to 8 D6 in total, compared to 12D6 individually.

Example 1 - Individual AckAck

You roll your three sets of D6 scoring the following:

1,4,5,6 (with a the extra being a 4)
2,3,5,5
4,2,6,5 (with the extra being a 5).

So after all the AckAck you have Killed 2 Tokens (from the 6's), which leaves three in the Squadron. So you now need three 5's in any one of your sets to cause an abort. Because you only have 2 in two of them, and 1 in the other, the Tiny Tokens are allowed to continue their attack run.

Congratulations, thats now 9 AD hitting on 3's against your Cruiser. Ouch!

Example 2 - Linked AckAck.

So this time the Cruisers link their AckAck giving them a total of 8 (you half the AD for each ship linking after the first).

The scores on the doors are:

1,2,3,5,5,5,6,6 (extra rolls: 1,5)

So now you have killed two Tiny Tokens, and with 4 aborts (although three would have done) you have managed to force an abort, preventing the remaining three Tiny Tokens from attacking!

The PDF also includes a summary of all the Tiny Token Special Rules. It doesnt break them down by Nation which is frustrating, but this is something that is easy enough to work around. Just remember that all those rules do not apply to your Tiny Tokens. They are Nation specific.

Overall

Well Overall I feel this is an improvement on the Tiny Token rules. They are less clunkly to track, and this should speed the game up as its something less to keep track of.

I plan on building some bases to move my Wings on so it will take even less time to get them moved and sorted.

Tournaments
Well the tournament scence was a lot of fun this year.

I entered four doubles tournaments, winning three of them and finishing 21st out of 130 at the main one down in Lenton GW HQ.

I also played in another four single player tournaments with my Grey Knights, a 1000 point tournament and three 1750 tournaments.

I won three of them and finished 2nd in another.

Finally I entered a Warhammer tournament, 2400 points and had to basically re-learn the game in the month from when I said I would enter to the actual tournament date (including painting a load of Dwarves for it). This time I managed to finish 11th!

Overall an excellent start to my competitive playing!

Stats
Well here is more evidence I think about this too much I guess but ah well.

In total I played: 77 Wargames.

I won 47 of them, drew 10 and lost 21 giving me the following win rate!

Cant complain about it, and to be honest some of the best games have been my losses ( I am looking at the 2nd game in our Doubles Tournament in Feb where we went from 2 kill points up to 2 kill points down in the final turn!).

So not a terrible month especially as it involved Christmas!

The first few games in with my Necrons were edgy things this month, a couple of Doubles games and then some 1750 games to get my feet wet as such.

The other side of my Hobby has reared its head since the Necrons and Christmas came around... painting and modelling!

This month also saw my first game of Storm of Magic, of which we only managed a couple of turns as we slowed ourselves down too much with rule questions and not enough time. I hope to get some pictures up of it shortly though!

The Big Game!

So with the New Year past us now, I am looking towards what events I have on my Calendar.

Two Tournaments in Feb, one doubles one singles. Both of these have preperations well underway.

The event that I truly think will blow my mind is the Big Game.

Yes I managed to convince my local store to let me run a Huge Apocalypse event... still waiting for confirmed numbers and fingers crossed for some decent numbers.

If you are in the local area of Kirkcaldy on the 21st January why not pop in, or better yet bring your Models along with you!

I like many of you bought myself a copy of White Dwarf this month, my Necrons were banging on their carry case doors and I couldnt wait to get my hands on the Codex, so as a final act upon leaving my FLGS yesterday I bought myself a copy of the White Dwarf.

I have to say I wasnt disappointed, I thought it was a decent issue with lots of information. Anyway, in the aim of trying to build up a bank of scenarios I decided what better way than to blog them?!

So without further ado, here are the important bits of Information from the Scenario used in this months Battle Report.

To my mind you can use this scenario to re-enact the Eldar & Ultramarine Alliance against the Necron forces, or simpy use it to represent a well defended location on a Imperial World of low strategic Importance.

They used two allied forces at 2000 points per ally, so 4000 points in total.

Board Size: 6' x 4'

Deployment Zone

Red = Attacker Delpoyment Zone

Green = Defender Deployment Zone

Basically Nominate one of the Long Board Edges as the Northern Border.

The Necrons then get to deploy upto 9" from the remaining Board Edges.

The Defender gets to deploy upto 30" in from that Boardedge.

Within the Defenders Deployment Zone they should setup a lot of defensive structures. Ideally using the Bastion / SkyShield Kits & Aegis Defence lines that come from the Planetstrike Terrain Set.

All the Rules for using these Buildings are described in the Planetstrike rulebook, however the Bastions Armour Value is reduced to 12/12/12.

ObjectivesThere should be 5 Objectives placed on the Table. If the Attacker takes a Named Special Character HQ choice then the Defend can claim an extra Objective if they kill them in Close Combat.

Game Length
5 Turns.

First Turn
The Attacker goes first, unless the Defender can Sieze the Initative.

This is something I managed to try out against my brother, and while it won the game it definately showed that improvements could be made!

Not quite the 1750 I had aimed for but getting ever closer. This is the first list I have written that I felt was capable of dealing with a lot of different threats... ok so its only played Blood Angels, and some decent Dice Rolls helped a lot, but this is the one I think I am going to play test for the next little while to see how it does.

Dystopian Wars - The French are Coming!

Merry Christmas everyone!

I decided to post this when I opened my emails this morning to find all this stuff in my inbox from Spartan Games (I strongly advise signing upto their news letter for these type of updates alone!).

The dawn of the 19th century brought with it a series of catastrophic events that stripped France of its status as an imperial power. Having reached, as they saw it, the very lowest depths of despair, the French spent the following decades dedicating all their efforts into rebuilding their nation and its glory.

Now, as the 1870s dawn, and the world is gripped by crisis, France sees at last the chance to regain its rightful place as a great power. The self-satisfied, naysayers and complacent, at home and abroad, who in the past have sought to write off the Republique's fortunes are soon to be proven very wrong.

The French military forces are split into three services: l'Armee de Terre, l'Armee de Mer and l'Armee de l'Air: literally, the Armies of the Land, Sea and Sky. The Navy and Air Forces also include their own integral marine forces, known as Mousquetons, after the compact automatic carbines that are their main armament.

L'Armee de Terre is split into the Regular and Reserve Armies and the Heavy Assault Command. The Regular Army is formed of Armoured Regiments; each incorporates its own artillery and infantry elements. The Armoured Regiments form the backbone of the Land Army.

The French Navy is divided into three fleets: Atlantic, Channel and Mediterranean, with the strongest forces assigned to the latter two. The Navy also incorporates its own aerial element, the Maritime Air Force, which is responsible for the fighter and light bomber squadrons employed on the Navy's battle-carriers.

The third of the Republique's armed services is the most glamorous and also very cosmopolitan. The French air service, focussed as it is on France itself, employs large numbers of conventional short ranged aeroplanes, organised into fighter and bomber squadrons (escadrons de chasse and bombardier respectively) grouped within Air Combat Wings. This part of the air force also incorporates the heavy bomber squadrons.

Dystopian Wars Release Schedule

So while checking my blog for the first time in a week, I decided to pop over to the Spartan Games website.

What I found there were a couple of their Blog posts that are definately worth a read (if you havent already seen them).

The first State of the Nations describes benefits for the nations currently in the game. In most cases this is somethign as simple as additioanl MARs rules for the mentioned Nation.

The Second is called the Fate of the Nations another interesting read with PDF links for stat cards.

Anyway, thats it for today, regular posting should (note the word) resume after Christmas.

Army List Wednesdays 500 Points of Grey Knights

This list was built for a Tournament I ran a few weeks ago.

It is NOT intended as a list for Combat Patrol.

For Grey Knights I was actually impressed at how much I fit into 500 points lol!

So in total 14 Guys and a raft of 2+ armour saves!

Now normally I go for a statement that Grey Knights need to be hitting 1750-2000 points to really be hitting their stride, however at this lower points value they may also have an edge!

Obviously for Combat Patrol this list would need rejigging and in that cast I would tweak it round to the following:

This leaves me with 15 points for 'toys' for my Inqusitior and a decent chunk of men (21 in total) for a 500 point game!

February Doubles Scenarios

So as part of the preperation for the Tournament in February I thought I would post the 5 scenarios we are going to be playing.

I have always thought that its best to keep the mission objectives in mind when building your armies for Tournaments... hence why I used Draigo as my HQ when HQ's were worth 3 Kill points each.

Anyway, without further ado here is the info.

If the divide is too close to tell then roll a dice to determine the quarter. A vehicle can only hold or contest a quarter if it is not immobilised or destroyed.

Dystopian Wars - Eotbs Flyer

As ever I love the level of detail that Spartan put onto their models, and yes this is a render, but I have still yet to see a render that had more detail on it than the model. Whatever they are doing they are doing it right!

Army List Wednesday Necrons for Doubles!

I dropped the ball last week and for anyone eagerly awaiting an army list I apologise (dont imagine there were too many of you).

This week I am going to post a couple of lists to side up with Blood Angels in the upcoming Doubles Tournament in Feb next year.

This has three scoring units which reduces the Blood Angels need to have scoring units on the table. The one that will be out in the open has a Resurrection Orb and two Ghost Arks capable of supporting it.

The Scarabs are there to put the fear of god into Tanks which will help at least a little with regards to our anti armour forum.

This option gives me a lot more Anti-Infantry Fire, leaving the tank busting to my Allies. The Scarabs will still cause issues to any tanks out there, and if they stay stationary it can be a serious issue for them.

The Traveller costs the same as my other lord option but can cause problems for opponents with vehicles of any description and his Lance also helps us out.

The Solar pulse can grant a turns grace if our enemy goes first and we want to try for an agressive setup. In fact alongside thigns that people feel must die (like Stormravens) a Solar pulse is probably not a bad thing at all!

This list has a chunk of Firepower and two Special Characters in it, of course Obyran gets the Barge and the Nemesor hides in one of the units of Warriors at the back of the table.

I will point out that if its a vehicle you suggest I use, please ensure its actually released because I aint gonna have the time, will or perhaps most importantly the skill to convert it.

Necron Scenario - Tomb World Revisited!

This is not a balanced scenario; this is designed to be difficult for the invader fighting against endless waves of Necrons.

This scenario was first drafted up back in April 2009 after reading one too many Planetstrike rumours, posted in 2010 and now re-written with the new Necron Codex release.

My Lord Inquisitor, the Galactic south western area of the cluster has fallen. It appears a Necron Dynasty has risen up from worlds both inhabited and not.

The first planet to fall was that of Derago. It received a Transmission from a Necron Phaeron requesting they remove their presence from the world within thirty planetary rotations. The Imperial Govenor of Derago ignored the warning, but did call in for additional support. The support did not arrive in time. Derago ((see attached data file for a full history on Derago) was a Hive World, there was no way it could be fully evacuated in that timescale. I do not use the world was lightly for all 5 of the major hive complexes have been destroyed, razed to the ground. It appears that not a single human being survived the Necron attack.

The Support that was requested arrived in the form of a Blood Angels Battle Barge, they managed to get one Thunderhawk and a handful of Drop Pods to the Surface before coming under attack in the Space around Derago by Necron vessels. On the ground the Blood Angels had barely landed before being assailed from all sides. The Thunderhawk managed to extract some Blood Angel survivors, and their Captains report is also attached.

To summarise the report My Lord, the Necrons have converted the Hives into raw resource for them to use as part of their world. The Blood Angel scans indicated extensive remodelling of the planet and Hives had already been completed, except around the Capitol.

In the Centre of what was once the Capitol Hive there is an unusually powerful signal. It appears to be a power source of some kind. I believe this may be one of the C’tan Monoliths the Sons of the Lion have previously encountered. It could very well be co-ordinating the entire Necron warmachine in that area. At the very least we believe it is the central hub of activity on Derago.

I respectfully submit to you that this is the ideal time to strike in force, with the revised explosives I mentioned in my interim report. They should be able to deal with the C’tan Monolith or whatever is actually down there. A Successful strike could stall their advance in local Star Systems buying us valuable time.

I do not ask this lightly as I appreciate the multitude of threats facing the Varcan Cluster itself, and I can only hope that you feel assistance is warranted here.

As the invasion force moves in on the location, swarms of Necrons emerge to defend their world. Unbeknown to the invasion force this is only the beginning.

Setup

Battlefield is setup as a ruined Cityscape. In the very Centre of the Battlefield there is a C’tan Monolith, make sure that this is in the very centre of the board as it forms the focal point for the game and the terrain layout.

The revised rules for the C'tan Monolith can be found here.

The invading force may setup anywhere on the table that is more that 24” from the C’tan Monolith.

Deployment

Explore Additional Pictoral methods for this section.

The invading army deploys first following these deployment rules. The Invader may deploy their army anywhere on the tabletop as long as they start the game at least 24” from the Inactive C’tan Monolith. They also must start at least 18” from each Necron Portal (this prevents Portals from being destroyed on Turn 1, unless the Demolition Charges are on faster choices).

The Necrons do not deploy anything on the table at the start of the game. Any Monoliths they have are brought in from Strategic Reserve by deep strike on Turn 2.

Each side may nominate to keep up to 50% of the Kill points in reserve, these units arrive from turn 2 as normal.

Necron units arriving on the table may arrive from either Monolith Portals, Dolomen Gates.

First Turn

In this scenario the Necrons always go first.

Objectives

Each of the Necron Dolomen Gates is an Objective this is whether they are alive or dead

The C’tan Monolith is an objective as well, however should it die, then Mark that spot on the battlefield with a Crater and this will count as an objective (the Centre Point should be used for measuring if you

This does mean that the while the C’tan Monolith is alive the Necrons will always have one Objective, as the enemy cannot contest it.

Scenario Rules for the NecronsDolomen Gate:

Invulnerable Save: 5+ (this represent shots going through the portal rather than hitting the structure)

Undying Legions: Such is the power of a Necron World that when the Necrons phase out due to damage they are repaired nearly instantly by the numerous Tomb Spyders and Scarabs that exist beneath the ground.

All Necron units that have the Reanimation Protocol Special rule are recycled back into the battle. This means that any Necrons that do not succeed their Reanimation Protocol rule are placed to one side. At the beginning of each turn if there are enough dead Necrons of one type to form a legal unit then they may re-enter play through either a Portal or a Necron Monolith. If you have enough models to form a legal unit they MUST be brought onto the board, you may not withhold them for a turn. For Clarification the Minimum and maximum Unit sizes are displayed below:

It Came from Below: As the invaders move into the Necropolis they inadvertently awaken the ancient Guardians. The first defenders of the city were hidden around the city and now come out of their slumber to destroy the invaders.

To represent this on the Necrons first turn the any units that are deployed may Deep Strike with the following four changes.

1. If they scatter into an enemy unit they count as having charged and fight in the Assault Phase
2. They are able to Move, Shoot and Assault as normal; they have just risen from the ground, and are out to get you!
3. If they have to roll of the Deep Strike Mishap table, discount any results which destroy the unit. They simply count it as misplaced and the Invader gets to place them.
4. They do not have to roll for Dangerous terrain if appearing within a building.

Scenario Rules for the Invaders

Demolition Charges: The invaders have bought along some high grade explosives to destroy the power source they detected. Three of the invading units may be given the Demolition Charges, make sure to note this on your army list before the game begins to avoid confusion. They are assumed to have enough Charges to last the entire game, so may use the charge several times if they get the chance.

To use the Demolition Charge the Unit must be in base to base contact with either a Monolith, Pylon or the C’tan Monolith. In the turn they wish to use the Demolition charges they are unable to move in the Shooting or Assault phase, however the unit may shoot at another target after using the Demolition charge. When they use it D6, on a roll of a 1, the charge fails due to a malfunction or incorrect positioning and kills D3 squad members. No Armour Saves are allowed and it counts as a Strength 10 hit so will be instant death to most multi wound models. Invulnerable saves may be taken.

On a roll of a 2+ the Demolition Charge goes off as planned. It inflicts D3 + 1 Penetrating hits against whatever target it is used against.

Planetary Invasion: Due to the nature of the invasion, the invading army counts all of the Troop Choices to have the unending assault special rule. This means that when the unit is destroyed the following turn they are able to re-enter play using the rules for Flank March.

Flank March: When a unit enters the game from Reserve they may enter from any table edge.

Yalusa - Event Day!

Yalusa is an industrial world about suffer a terrible fate.

The plant is located just to the Galactic west of the main hub of the Varcan Cluster. It is in a relatively low populated area of space. Even so the planet itself is home to several billion souls all working for the good of the Imperium.

Recent excavations have uncovered an ancient temple dating back to the Dark Age. While the initial scans have shown nothing of note from a technological point of view, the texts that the Librarians and Scholars began to examine led to more and more clues to the where abouts of a powerful weapon.

News of this reached the ears of one of Inquisitor Jachems agents. With the Inquisitor informed his forces began to quielty and discreetly mobilise towards Yalusa. Unfortunately very little in the Imperium actually happens at the speed of light, nor does the massive task of organising the redeployment of armies go unnoticed.

As such by the time the Inquisitor had his forces ready to move, never every faction within the Varcan Cluster knew that something was 'up'.

Little did the Planetary Govenor of Yalusa know, but his world was about to change, and change forever...

Dystopian War Islands!

Another week and another attempt from me to keep up with all the Goodies coming out of Spartan Games. I may actually be a month or two behind, that might not be a bad thing as it gives people a chance to see models they may not have already seen!

So this time its onto Dystopian Wars Terrain. Specically some nice Islands that could easily double up as mountains should you so wish it.

All in all I like the way they look and the scale looks good. What more can you ask for?

You can find these islands, not at Spartan themselves, but rather at here. They also have some other nifty stuff that could very well work for Dystopian Wars.

Thanks to Tom & Nikki I managed 4 games on my first day of gaming. An impressive total in 8 hours as far as I am concerned. From then on it got worse!

Over all I placed 13th out of 42 at the tournament so not too bad for my first competitive games of Warhammer in over a year, and only my 6th at this points level.

The Winter War tournament was an excellent event with three excellent opponents. I certianly need to get playing more games of Warhammer, and dont worry a post on the Winter War Tournament will be up before the end of the year (I promise John it really will!).

While I dont expect to get lots of gaming done this month I do have a series of Photos taken of my Brothers models that I intend to get posted up over the next few months.

Army List Wednesdays - Necrons! - 1750 Points

With the release of a new codex, there are obviously lots of lists of Necrons going about on the wonderful internet.

Here is one I have built and that I plan to be playing today. It mostly uses models I own, and only a couple of proxis and one of the new releases.

My Plans for the Necrons are to build them up slowly... no big rush to buy new models. Just a couple a month me thinks.

So without further ado, here is my list:

So this rocks in at 1750 points, and is quite possibly a sub optimum army given all the other new toys in the codex.

It does lack in the AV14 killing area, but one unit of Warriors is Relentless due to the Overlords Phaeron ability so this does help in bringing down, or at least stopping some vehicles. Enough glances can do lots of damage.

The Cryptek & Scarab Swarms are also capable of making those pesky Landraiders a lot easier to kill so I think it has a lot going for it will just have to see how it performs on the table! I am sure there will be plenty more changes to this over the coming weeks and months!

However after seeing this a few months ago I really changed my opinion as with it as your central hub of your airforce this looks just excellent!

Fighting Necrons (Orikan) - Some Common Sense!

I have read several blogs that have pointed out the potential problems for a mech list in Dawn of War. Yes I am talking about Orikan the Diviner and his Temporal Snares.

Lots of people seem to feel this is potentially game breaking in Dawn of War, especially those people out there who have 10+ tanks half of which (or more) are transports.

Well for everyone crying Broken, I am sure plenty of silent readers (the majority of the gamer base & Blog readers) are either not worried about it, or wondering how to deal with this.

Here are my thoughts, as a Necron player of what I expect my opponent to do, and what I would do in their situation.

When your opponent lets you know that he has Orikan in his army (and really you should know this before deployment is even rolled for) and you are in a Dawn of War Scenario simply declare all your transport models are going to going to enter the battlefield empty, with the units walking on as well.

Then roll the move for your Transport to check they can get on the table, if they can then roll the move for the squad that is normally in the Tranport so they come on the table in the same area. With a bit of luck you will be able to get your unit on the table and embarked upon your tank straight away. Ok so you are losing the 12"+ of movement from your table edge should you pass the difficult terrain test on your tank, but it is a safer way to ensure that your men always get on the table.

If you want to risk moving your guys onto the Table in Dawn of War against Orikan then please suck it up if it goes wrong, because its not Orikan that killed your transport and the men in it, its your decision to ignore what could potentially happen.

The other strategy is to reserve everything, this one is (imo) far more risky as you could come onto the table piecemeal and make the Necrons job easier.

So overall my the common sense bit of this simply that.... common sense. Adapt your army. For me a Truly broken army is the one that doesnt need to change any models, strategy or deployment with a new Codex release.
